In the third of a series of posts by Mark Cooper, CEO of PM Eleven, we will outline what we believe are the essential guidelines for an Ellipse to SAP migration. Using our (PM Eleven team) extensive experience in SAP projects over more than 25 years, we will expose the key lessons learned for application to any Ellipse to SAP conversion.

…. Don’t risk the operation!

Sniff the breeze early

So, you have successfully selected SAP and your implementor(s). If you are the CEO or GM on the steering committee, I can almost guarantee what will happen next.

You will see a lot effort will go into putting the governance committees in place and commencing your reporting cycles and immediately you will be comforted by the positive progress reflected by all the green traffic lights each week.

Just about every project which fails, the people working on the project know at the start whether it will succeed!

Deciphering between the nay-sayers (which always exist) and the skilled implementors who know when something isn’t going quite right is a skill.

Then there are the yes men that always tell you everything is great. Your SI will often not raise the white flag until its too late….  “we need another 6 months” or “we have to delay go-live because of unforeseen circumstances”. Rubbish – circumstances should always have been foreseen.

The other skill that Independent Advice will bring is the ability to insert an expert into one area to sure-up the outcome. This might be in data migration, RICEF development, architecture review or something similar.  Irrespective what it is, take the plunge, mitigate the risk as time is often against you.

The key lesson is to understand the scope, deliverables, milestones and talk to your business representatives inserted on the project.
